Spike League
Goes for the Gold:
Playoff action kicks off tonight
3 Quad champion and 3 doubles champions to be crowned tonight. Top 3 Quads
divisions battle it out Wednesday.
First ever
WOMEN'S division Champions crowned Wednesday
night.
After an exciting, action packed season of play it comes down to only 10 teams
which will be crowned division champions this week.
Summer League
Player Party set for Wednesday, September 1!
Sinatra
Park will be the site tonight and again tomorrow night as
Spike League’s
Summer Season plays down to the fortunate few who have
qualified for the playoff push in hopes of spiking their way to their division
championships this week. Some 125 teams including a record 42 coed
doubles and for the first time ever, 7 women’s teams competed all summer long at
beautiful Sinatra Park in ten different divisions for the right to play for it
all this week.
With as many as 18 nets stretched across the entire field,
Spike
League’s
most successful and popular season was the talk of the town and the volleyball
community in the NJ/NY area.
Among the teams to watch in the playoffs tonight will be returning top
coed division champs, Laurel and JJ who will have to defend their title
against powered teams such as Donna/Mike. Those two teams have a pair of
fresh legs up on the other four teams who qualified with a bye into the
semifinals. Those teams will have to show stamina as well as skill in a possible
three set volley marathon to the winner’s podium.
The
Double Down
division also featured a deep cast of quality teams and with 8 qualifying; the
competition should be intense even for top seeds Alyssa/Dave and
Jaime/Ayman. Strategy as much as skill could very well determine the
division winner here.
Our newest coed division,
Hubby/Wife
featured 15 enthusiastic, highly motivated teams that have no doubt been staying
up late night or Tivo-ing the beach volleyball play from Athens in an attempt to
gain an edge. While teams such as Cindy/Macelon and Beate/Max
feature very strong male players, the steady play of Carrie/Perry
combining her strong play and his great hustle have made them the team to beat.
Even the unfortunate departure of #3 seed Beate/Max does little to lessen
the talent level in this division.
Chris Hanlon
and his late season replacement
Kristin are yet another team to be reckoned with.
The loss of Brooke to injury for team Brooke/Cary in the last week of the
season has hurt that teams chances as
Cary tries to
mesh with his last minute replacement.
In the Quad divisions, the
Castaway
division may have the least experienced teams in the league but certainly not
the hardest trying. A great case in point: Worldwide Spike. Captain
Declan Burke
spun his wheels in the early going just getting teammates for his team often
left only with Jorge to partner up with. But perseverance paid off and now the
team is poised in first place to battle it out with top finishers like Texas
Arizona and veteran teams such as A Shore Thing. But this is the
playoffs and play will have to be cleaned up in order for teams to pass muster
tonight and that can go a long way to determining the division’s best.
The
Boardwalk
division had a record 20 teams which were split into two pools from which a
total of 8 teams qualified for a 3 match playoffs worthy of the ancient Greeks.
So many quality teams are in the playoff hunt that this division title will be
very hard fought. However, team Deep Dish has been doing it all summer as
have the We Dig crew and both teams are ready for all challenges facing
them. Eurotrash has come a long way in getting their team together,
Pfeffer has taken clinics to improve not only their team game but also their
play as individuals and Bumpin’ Uglies will not make it a pretty for
their foes as long as they are in it.
It’s going to be hotter than the sands of
Athens in the
Sunscreen division as the top 4 teams in this division
battle for the crown. Anu’s Avengers team was dealt a tough blow with the ankle
injury to team MVP Randy Robles but the team has great depth. They’ll
need it against the
Purple Cobras who feature two of the best players in the
division in
Bryan Fitter
and Macelon D’Sa. The Earmuffs play hard every point and
Clay Carlson’s has quietly assembled a strong hitting team.
He sets them up; they spike ‘em down. There should be some real fireworks in
this division.
Wednesday night’s action closes out the season with strong play by the
Muscle
Beach
division teams.
Bitch Slap hits so hard they could get
arrested but rival Choice Hops
knows them well. Both Ref’s Revenge
and Dodge This have retooled their lineups and look ready to upset the
frontrunners.
The
Downtown
division graduates 6 teams to the finals out of 12 with the top two seeds,
Notorious D.I.G and Heavy Dinkers getting a bye into semi-final
action. Captain’s
Cory Checket
and
Scott Buerkle provide a lot of team offense as well as
leadership.
The
Skyline
Division
is led by Dream On who must get past the reality of Scared Hitless
before any dreams of division championships can come true. Vamanos and
Delmaniacs basically are retooled versions of their Tuesday night teams,
Avengers and Earmuffs.
The night’s action closes out on the ladies courts as the
Bikini
division plays off for their own crown. While bathing suits probably will not be
worn, there most definitely will be a talent segment to the competition. The
talent being which team can spike em down and which team can dig em up! Will it
be the veteran players on
Dawn Howes’ Ho Down
team led by
Carey Finn and
Lisa Mascri?
Or the young guns of
Michelle Yoo’s Cut Shot team. Of course the gals of Galorade
and the ladies of Ladies Night will have something to say about it too
but win or lose these teams will put the “Grrrr” in Girl!
Be sure to stop by and check out all of the action!
